Writing from Scratch

English has a robust collection of words for writing. All of them have a bloodline that reveals both the physical and psychic work of writing.

I met with the parents of one of my longtime students today, a charismatic and compassionate 9th grader with dyslexia. Her dyslexia is fairly mild; she's a skilled reader and has made a great deal of progress in her spelling over the last three or four years. Where the rubber hits the road for her – and leaves skidmarks – is with writing, just like for most people with dyslexia.
